Empty Squares in Arbitrary Orientation Among Points
This paper studies empty squares in arbitrary orientation among a set of
points in the plane. We prove that the number of empty squares with four
contact pairs is between and , and that these bounds are
tight, provided is in a certain general position. A contact pair of a
square is a pair of a point and a side of the square with . The upper bound also applies to the number of empty squares
with four contact points, while we construct a point set among which there is
no square of four contact points. These combinatorial results are based on new
observations on the Voronoi diagram with the axes rotated and its
close connection to empty squares in arbitrary orientation. We then present an
algorithm that maintains a combinatorial structure of the Voronoi
diagram of , while the axes of the plane continuously rotates by
degrees, and simultaneously reports all empty squares with four contact pairs
among in an output-sensitive way within time and space,
where denotes the number of reported squares. Several new algorithmic
results are also obtained: a largest empty square among and a square
annulus of minimum width or minimum area that encloses over all
orientations can be computed in worst-case time.Comment: 39 pages, 11 figure
Inscribing or Circumscribing a Histogon to a Convex Polygon
We consider two optimization problems of approximating a convex polygon, one by a largest inscribed histogon and the other by a smallest circumscribed histogon. An axis-aligned histogon is an axis-aligned rectilinear polygon such that every horizontal edge has an integer length. A histogon of orientation ? is a copy of an axis-aligned histogon rotated by ? in counterclockwise direction. The goal is to find a largest inscribed histogon and a smallest circumscribed histogon over all orientations in [0,?). Depending on whether the horizontal width of a histogon is predetermined or not, we consider several different versions of the problem and present exact algorithms. These optimization problems belong to shape analysis, classification, and simplification, and they have applications in various cost-optimization problems
Universal convex covering problems under translation and discrete rotations
We consider the smallest-area universal covering of planar objects of
perimeter 2 (or equivalently closed curves of length 2) allowing translation
and discrete rotations. In particular, we show that the solution is an
equilateral triangle of height 1 when translation and discrete rotation of
are allowed. Our proof is purely geometric and elementary. We also give
convex coverings of closed curves of length 2 under translation and discrete
rotations of multiples of and . We show a minimality of the
covering for discrete rotation of multiples of , which is an equilateral
triangle of height smaller than 1, and conjecture that the covering is the
smallest-area convex covering. Finally, we give the smallest-area convex
coverings of all unit segments under translation and discrete rotations
for all integers
The Impact of Overactive Bladder on Health-Related Quality of Life, Sexual Life and Psychological Health in Korea
Purpose We aimed to estimate the prevalence of overactive bladder (OAB) in Korea, to assess the variation in prevalence by sex and age, and to measure the impact of OAB on quality of life. Methods A population-based, cross-sectional telephone survey was conducted between April and June 2010 with a questionnaire regarding the prevalence of OAB, demographics, and the impact of OAB on quality of life. A geographically stratified random sample of men and women aged ≥30 years was selected. Results The overall prevalence of OAB was 22.9% (male, 19%; female, 26.8%). Of a total of 458 participants with OAB, 37.6% and 19.9% reported moderate or severe impact on their daily life and sexual life (5.6% and 3.5%, respectively, in participants without OAB). Anxiety and depression were reported by 22.7% and 39.3% of participants with OAB, respectively (9.7% and 22.8%, respectively, in participants without OAB). Only 19.7% of participants with OAB had consulted a doctor for their voiding symptoms, but 50.7% of respondents with OAB were willing to visit a hospital for the management of their OAB symptoms. Conclusions This study confirmed that OAB symptoms are highly prevalent in Korea, and many sufferers appear to have actively sought medical help. OAB has severe effects on daily and sexual life as well as psychological health

Session D5: Current Status of Fish Passages in South Korea
Abstract:
Weirs are important for countries that agriculture is the primary industry due to the stable supply of water to agricultural fields. Because agriculture is still important in Korean peninsula, weirs have been constructing until now from small streams to large rivers. However, only limited fish passages were installed in weirs, and there were no managements. As a results, streams and rivers have become highly fragmented, with fish migration being severely impeded. Thus, ministry of agriculture, food and rural affairs investigated entire fish passages in Korea in 2010-2011, and estimated current status and problems. A total of 33,718 weirs were installed (until year 2012), and this means that weirs are arithmetically located every 0.81km of the total stream length in Korea. Fish passages, however, were constructed only in 4,496 weirs (13.3% of installation rate). The weir type fish passages with Ice- Harbor type fishways (8.1%) which are favoured nowadays was showed the greatest number (36%), and the vertical slot type passages was in the second place (31%). The denil type and nature-like type were rarely installed. Only 18.1% of installed fish passages were left whole, and urgent repair is needed for 56.7%. Fish passages of 31.3% were incorporated into the recommended slope range of Korea (1:20). Most of problems are related discharge, poor entrance, breakage and sedimentation. With these structural problems, discontinuous installation of fish passages generates poor continuity of streams. Currently, to improve stream connectivity many projects from Korean government are now conducting and preparing, and additionally development of fish passages specialized for Korean fishes are required
Changes of empathy in medical college and medical school students: 1-year follow up study
BACKGROUND: This study aims to determine the correlation between medical education systems, medical college (MC) and medical school (MS), and empathy by investigating the changes in empathy among students with each additional year of medical education. METHODS: The subjects were MC and MS students who had participated in the same study the previous year. All participants completed the same self-report instruments: a questionnaire on sociodemographic characteristics, and the Korean edition of the Student Version of the Jefferson Scale of Empathy (JSE-S-K), Among 334 students, the final analysis was conducted on the data provided by 113 MC and 120 MS students, excluding 101 with incomplete data. RESULTS: The age and sex did not affect the changes in empathy. Though the JSE-S-K score of MS was significantly higher than that of MC in initial investigation, this study found no difference of empathy between MC and MS. CONCLUSION: Empathy increased significantly after one year of medical education. The difference between two education systems, MC and MS, did not affect the changes in empathy
Sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis in a long-term propranolol user
Sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis (SEP) is a rare cause of bowel obstruction that is characterized by the encasement of the small bowel by a thick, whitish, and fibrous membrane. The pathophysiology of SEP is poorly understood and preoperative diagnosis is difficult. Previous reports suggest that SEP may be linked to the chronic use of β-adrenergic blockers. A 46-year-old man with liver cirrhosis and end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis presented with recurrent abdominal pain and borborygmi. He had been taking propranolol to prevent bleeding from gastroesophageal varices for the past 15 years. Abdominal computed tomography showed ileal loops encapsulated by soft tissue with dilatation of the proximal small bowel on the right side of the abdomen. Barium follow-through showed conglomerated distal ileal loops with a cauliflower-like appearance. Explorative laparotomy revealed a thick, fibrous, whitish capsule encapsulating the ileal loops. The covering membrane was dissected and excised, resulting in an improvement in symptoms after surgery. Accordingly, a final diagnosis of SEP was made. Due to the lack of other apparent causes for SEP, we conclude that in this case, the long-term use of propranolol may be associated with the development of SEP
MicroRNA-150 modulates intracellular Ca2+ levels in naïve CD8+ T cells by targeting TMEM20
Regulation of intracellular Ca2+ signaling is a major determinant of CD8+ T cell responsiveness, but the mechanisms underlying this regulation of Ca2+ levels, especially in naïve CD8+ T cells, are not fully defined. Here, we showed that microRNA-150 (miR-150) controls intracellular Ca2+ levels in naïve CD8+ T cells required for activation by suppressing TMEM20, a negative regulator of Ca2+ extrusion. miR-150 deficiency increased TMEM20 expression, which resulted in increased intracellular Ca2+ levels in naïve CD8+ T cells. The subsequent increase in Ca2+ levels induced expression of anergy-inducing genes, such as Cbl-b, Egr2, and p27, through activation of NFAT1, as well as reduced cell proliferation, cytokine production, and the antitumor activity of CD8+ T cells upon antigenic stimulation. The anergy-promoting molecular milieu and function induced by miR-150 deficiency were rescued by reinstatement of miR-150. Additionally, knockdown of TMEM20 in miR-150-deficient naïve CD8+ T cells reduced intracellular Ca2+ levels. Our findings revealed that miR-150 play essential roles in controlling intracellular Ca2+ level and activation in naïve CD8+ T cells, which suggest a mechanism to overcome anergy induction by the regulation of intracellular Ca2+ levels115Ysciescopu
